What is Annihilationism?
Annihilationism teaches that the wicked will not experience eternal conscious punishment but will ultimately be destroyed or cease to exist. Some place this at death, others after temporary judgment, but the claim is the same: the unsaved do not continue forever.
It is held by groups like Seventh-day Adventists, Christadelphians, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and some mainline Protestants. A few evangelicals, such as John Stott (later in life) and Edward Fudge, have shown sympathy for it.
This view contrasts with the historic Christian consensus, which has consistently affirmed eternal conscious punishment across all major branches of the church.
Below are the key issues with Annihilationism from biblical, hermeneutical, and contextual angles:
Problem #1 – The Bible Speaks Clearly of Eternal Punishment, Not Extinction
Scripture uses explicit language that directly contradicts Annihilationism:
✴️ Matthew 25:46 – “These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
👉🏼 You can’t have eternal life vs. temporary punishment. The contrast collapses if the wicked cease to exist.
✴️ Revelation 14:11 – “The smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night.”
👉🏼 This describes ongoing experience, not extinction.
✴️ Revelation 20:10 – The devil, beast, and false prophet are tormented forever and ever.
👉🏼 Their conscious, continual torment is explicitly affirmed.
✴️ Daniel 12:2 – “Some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”
👉🏼 Both groups have ongoing, everlasting destinies.
✴️ Mark 9:48 – “Where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.”
👉🏼 Unending imagery that assumes continued existence.
✴️ Jude 7 – Sodom and Gomorrah serve as an example of “eternal fire.”
👉🏼 The judgment’s effect is eternal, pointing to ongoing consequences, not disappearance.
Together these passages present a consistent biblical pattern: eternal, conscious punishment. Not annihilation.
Problem #2 – The Hermeneutical Problem with Annihilationism
Annihilationists often:
✴️ emphasize “destroy,” “perish,” “consume”
✴️ downplay clear texts about “torment,” “no rest,” “forever”
They frequently appeal to 2 Thessalonians 1:9 (“eternal destruction”) as if it means the wicked cease to exist. But the Greek word olethros refers to ruin, not nonexistence.
Scripture also uses “destruction” metaphorically for:
✴️ the lost sheep of Israel (not annihilated)
✴️ ruined wineskins (still present)
✴️ lost money (still exists)
✴️ destroyed cities (still standing in ruins)
A ruined thing still exists; its condition is what is destroyed. The “destruction” is eternal in its outcome, not in the moment of its act. Reading “destroy” as “cease to exist” breaks the Bible’s own usage and creates a hermeneutical inconsistency.
Problem #3 – The Case Study of the Rich Man and Lazarus
Jesus’ account of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19–31) is one of the clearest narrative arguments against annihilationism. The rich man is fully conscious after death, aware of his surroundings, able to feel torment, remember his life, reason, and speak. Nothing in the passage suggests fading away, soul-sleep, or eventual extinction.
✴️ He “lifted up his eyes” in torment
✴️ He begged for relief
✴️ He remembered his brothers
✴️ He carried ongoing guilt and fear
Every detail assumes continued personal existence.
Even if viewed as a parable, Jesus never builds parables on false theological realities. The story’s force depends on the reality it depicts: conscious, self-aware existence under judgment. As a case study, it stands as a direct contradiction to the idea that the wicked will one day cease to exist.
Problem #4 - The Philosophical and Ontological Problems with Annihilationism
Annihilationists often assumes that immortality is conditional and that humans are not naturally immortal, so God must sustain the wicked eternally if they are to continue existing.
But this contradicts core biblical anthropology:
✴️ Humans are made in God’s image and created for ongoing existence (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
✴️ Souls exist after death in conscious awareness (Luke 16:19–31; Matt. 10:28; Rev. 6:9–10).
For annihilationism, hell requires a change in the nature of humans: the imago Dei is ultimately erased. That raises MASSIVE theological problems.
Problem #5 - The Gravity of Sin and God’s Holiness
Annihilationism often assumes punishment must be proportionate in a way that finite beings cannot incur infinite punishment.
But biblically:
✴️The severity of the crime is measured by the dignity of the One offended. That’s why any sin is infinite in seriousness. It is against an infinitely holy God.
✴️ Eternal punishment reflects the ongoing rebellion of the wicked, not a one-time sin. Jonathan Edwards, CS Lewis and many other theologians argue that the damned continue in hatred of God forever.
A finite creature can commit an offense of infinite weight if the offended party is infinite.
Problem #6 - The Resurrection Problem
Scripture teaches that both believers and unbelievers are raised bodily:
✴️ John 5:28–29 – resurrection of life and resurrection of judgment
✴️ Acts 24:15 – resurrection of both the just and unjust
What is the point of a bodily resurrection for the wicked if they are immediately snuffed out?
The entire point of resurrection is embodied existence. A physical resurrection followed by instantaneous extinction does not align with biblical resurrection theology.
Problem #7 - The Cross Itself Testifies Against Annihilationism
If the punishment for sin is annihilation, then:
✴️ Jesus should have been annihilated.
✴️ The cross becomes a non-parallel substitution.
✴️ The atonement collapses.
But Christ suffered the wrath of God…. not annihilation.
Substitutionary atonement assumes the punishment due to sinners is conscious suffering, not nonexistence.
Annihilationism breaks penal substitution.
Problem #8 - Church History… A Consensus Against Annihilationism
From the early church onward, the doctrine of eternal conscious punishment is nearly unanimous:
The only outliers were unorthodox fringe sects, and even groups like the Seventh-day Adventists only adopted annihilationism in modern times.
The burden of proof rests overwhelmingly on the innovators of Annihilationism …. not the continuous witness of the church.
Problem #9 - The Slippery Slope Into Wider Doctrinal Error
Annihilationism rarely stays isolated. Once eternal judgment is softened, other doctrines begin to shift. Below are the 5 main dangerous doctrinal drifts that Annihilationism leads to…
✴️ It reshapes God’s character.
If endless punishment feels “too severe,” God’s holiness and justice are adjusted to match human intuition, which weakens the seriousness of sin and divine wrath.
✴️ It alters the doctrine of man.
To defend annihilationism, many deny the soul’s ongoing consciousness, opening the door to soul sleep or conditional immortality. Positions that are outside historic orthodoxy.
✴️ It strains the atonement.
If the penalty for sin is nonexistence, Christ did not bear the same judgment, pushing people toward alternative (and weaker) views of the cross.
✴️ It creates a selective hermeneutic. Clear “forever and ever” texts must be minimized, which often spreads into other areas and erodes confidence in Scripture’s plain reading.
✴️ And it commonly leads toward universalism. Denying eternal punishment is frequently the first step toward denying punishment altogether.
The danger is not only the doctrine itself, but the theological direction it inevitably sets.
Conclusion
God is perfectly just & perfectly merciful. Hell reveals the weight of sin, and the cross reveals the depth of His love.
No one has to face eternal judgment because Christ saves fully.

The greatness of His soul's suffering also appears from His complaint on the cross: Matt. 27:46 My God! my God! why hast Thou forsaken Me? He was not forsaken by the Divine nature, that personal bond could not be dissolved. He was also not forsaken by the love of the Father, which remained unchangeable. He was not forsaken by the Holy Spirit, with whom He was abundantly anointed. He does not complain of being forsaken into the hands of men; but He complains of the withholding of the manifestation of all light, love, help, comfort, and that for that time and in that time, when the distress was at its greatest, and He had the most need of them. When Christ says why? That is not an inquiry into the cause, but a moving expression of grief. It was not despair, for He said: My God, Father, but an expression that indicates the most comfortless, most helpless, and most sorrowful state. (Page 790)
2. The separation from God; and His wrath. Christ felt in full force the separation from God on account of sin. It is not to be conceived nor expressed what terror, what unrest, what darkness, what dreariness, what a sorrowful state it is, when God in indignation wholly and entirely separates Himself from a sinner, withdraws from him all favor, grace, light; forsakes him, casts him off, and leaves him standing there alone, where a person cannot live without having refreshment in something. To have a soul that cannot satisfy itself, that can do nothing but continually desire to be filled with something from without, and then to have nothing with which it can be filled, and to miss God, who alone is the satisfaction of a rational creature, to stand there hollow and wailing, in the entire separation from God, it is not to be borne nor endured. This shall be the eternal punishment of the ungodly: 2 Thess. 1:9. Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction, from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power. This the elect had deserved, this the Lord Jesus bears in their place; this was greater soul-anguish than we can comprehend. (Pages 791-792)
3. The curse. Christ felt in full force the curse, the execution of being accursed, Gal. 3:10, 13, the wrath of God, the anger of the Lord, in righteousness pouring itself out upon a sinner, Nahum 1:2. The dreadfulness of falling into the hands of the living God. Heb. 10:31. God being to someone a terror, Jer. 17:17. As this cannot be understood by anyone who has not felt it, so it can only barely be known by someone who has felt it only in its beginning or by approximation, and by no one be fully comprehended and expressed. Christ has indeed suffered eternal damnation: for eternal damnation, death, and pain consists in the total separation from God, in the total outpouring of God's wrath, and that so long until all is perfectly borne, and was sufficient as punishment for sin. Now, this Christ has suffered in its full force; see this above, par. 3, 4, 5, 6. This He suffered so long and to such a degree, until He could say: It is finished, John 19:30. I have finished the work which Thou hast given Me to do, John 17:4. (Page 808)
One might think that Christ's human nature, according to which alone He suffered, was finite, and therefore could not bear the infinite, and so the suffering was not sufficient for payment of sin, which deserves eternal punishment. Answer. How far Christ's human nature was strengthened is not for us to determine, but it always remained finite; Christ according to that nature bore the complete deprivation and the perfect wrath of the infinite God, against whom the elect had sinned. Yet one must carefully note that the human nature did not suffer, but the Person according to that nature, and because the Person was infinite, everything He suffered was also of an infinite power and worth. Contemplate the suffering of Christ for comfort against likesuffering. I need not assure you that such suffering in soul and body will befall you in this world; you know that well enough by experience, you perhaps taste it even now at present. You will still often experience the bitterness of sins, the displeasure of God over them, the hiding of God's countenance, the bondage and terror of conscience, the fear of death, the anguish on account of damnation, the assaults of Satan, poverty, contempt and scorn, both through your own fault and for godliness' sake and the name of Christ, tribulations for the Word's sake, though you do not regard it so. Perhaps you will yet be called to martyrdom, to seal the truth with your blood, also pains and sorrows of the body, yea indeed all manner of suffering of Christ, the one more, the other less. It did consist (as we hinted before) in the God-head's Suspending it's Comfortable Influence for a time from the Human Nature; Though our Lord had no Culpable Anxiety, yet He had a Sinless Fear, considering Him as Man; and that the infinite God was Angry, and Executing Angrily the Sentence of the Law against Him, (Though He was not angry at Him considered as in Himself, but as He stood in the room of the Elect, as their Cautioner, of whom He was to exact the Payment of their Debt) he could not but be in a wonderful amazement . . . . Those who oppose Jesus hate Jesus, even if they don't know it. And many people think they love Jesus, and they think they are following Jesus, but they really hate Jesus, and they will find out that they truly hate Jesus only after it's too late. Jesus warned us:
Not everyone who says to me, "Lord, Lord," will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, "Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?" And then will I declare to them, "I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness." Matt. 7:21-23
Murdering Jesus Today
If Jesus were alive today, they would murder him all over again. They would murder Jesus Christ for (in their minds) being a racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic, inflammatory bigot.

Jesus called a Gentile (a non-Jew) a dog:
And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon." . . . And he answered, "It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." Matt. 15:22, 26
They Would Blaspheme And Murder Jesus As A Misogynist
Not only did Jesus call a Gentile a dog, He called a Gentile woman a dog (See Matt. 15:22, 26 above). Jesus was a man, truly God and truly man. And He chose only men to be His disciples. Furthermore, Jesus was also very clearly against murder, and He deeply loves the little children (Matt. 18:5-6; Matt. 19:13-15). He strongly condemns the wickedness of a woman having the choice to kill her own unborn children through abortion. It's the only unthinkable sin God mentions in the Bible. For these reasons, many today who hate Jesus would certainly charge Him with misogyny.
But they are liars. Jesus was and is the most kind, loving, humble, lover and honorer of women this world has ever seen. But they would kill Him as a misogynist.
They Would Blaspheme And Murder Jesus As A Xenophobe
A xenophobe is someone who hates or is prejudice toward people from other countries. In this same interaction with the Canaanite woman, Jesus said:
I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Matt. 15:24
They would falsely accuse Jesus of only loving the Jews. But Jesus was no xenophobe. He came to shed His blood for people from every nation on earth (Rev. 5:9-10).
They Would Blaspheme And Murder Jesus As A Homophobe
Jesus taught that sexual immorality (which includes homosexual acts) is evil:
For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person. Matt. 15:19-20
Jesus taught that marriage is between one man and one woman:
He answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate." Matt. 19:4-6
They would rage against this and kill Jesus for being a homophobe. But Jesus is the most loving Man Who ever lived. And love tells the truth. If you love homosexuals, you will tell them the truth in love. It's loving to tell people they must repent of their sins or they will go to hell forever.
They Would Blaspheme And Murder Jesus As A Transphobe
Jesus taught that God created only two genders: male and female (see Matt. 19:4-6 above).
Progressive leftists hate this, and some would even kill Jesus over it. But Jesus was no transphobe. He told the truth in love.
They Would Blaspheme And Murder Jesus As An Inflammatory Bigot
Jesus hated evil so much and loved righteousness so much and loved sinners so much that sometimes He called the wicked by the names of wild animals:
At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to Him, "Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill You." And He said to them, "Go and tell that fox, 'Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course." Luke 13:31-32
Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you. Matt. 7:6
Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. Matt. 7:15
You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? Matt. 23:33
The foxes, the dogs, the pigs, the ravenous wolves, the serpents, and all those like them and on their side would blaspheme Jesus as an inflammatory bigot and murder Him just like they did two thousand years ago. Don't be like them. Repent and believe the Gospel! Jesus was no inflammatory bigot. He was and is the most loving Man who ever lived!
Are You The "They"?
They would kill Jesus. Who are the "they"? We were all once the "they" who hated Jesus Christ and would kill Him. In a sense, we did kill Him. Our sins killed Jesus on that cross, for the cross makes murders of us all. We were all born sinners and enemies of God, hating God, and hating His absolute authority over our lives. Our only hope is to repent of all of our sins and trust in the God-Man, Jesus Christ. He died on that cross for sinners, suffering the wrath of God, and then He rose up from the dead and ascended into heaven to reign forevermore:
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Cor. 6:9-11
Please turn from your sins and trust in Jesus Christ alone by faith alone today!
Jesus Loves And Died For His Enemies

Jesus came to save those who hate Him, blaspheme Him, and kill Him. He died on the cross and rose from the dead for those who hate Him. He loves His enemies, and He teaches His disciples to love their enemies as well. Christ followers don't mock others but more than conquer by enduring the mocking.
But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. Jesus (Matt. 5:44-45)
It is only by the power of Jesus Christ and His Spirit that His followers can love and forgive, even after the wicked murder those they love the most on this earth.
Will You Follow Him In His Suffering?
Jesus was no racist, misogynist, xenophobe, homophobe, transphobe, or inflammatory bigot. But those who hate God and hate Jesus will lie about Him and falsely accuse Him. And they will do the same to those who follow Jesus faithfully:
Jesus told us they would hate us too:
If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: "A servant is not greater than his master." If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. John 15:18-20
Jesus told us they would kill some of us too:
You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. You will be hated by all for my name's sake. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your lives. Luke 21:16-19
If no one wants to kill me, am I even a true Christian? Because I follow a crucified King Who told me the wicked would treat me like they treated Him.
It's Jesus-like, not merely political, to speak against the murder of millions of babies through abortion. It's Jesus-like, not merely political, to speak against gay and lesbian perversion. It's Jesus-like, not merely political, to speak against transgender perversion. It's Jesus-like, not merely political, to speak against the mutilation of children. It's Jesus-like, not merely political, to speak against partiality and injustice which God hates. It's Jesus-like, not merely political, to speak for rulers to be Romans 13 rulers who punish those who do evil and reward those who do good. It's Jesus-like, not merely political, to speak against the false religions of the world and tell how they are demonic. It's Jesus-like to do all this, all in love (love your enemies!), while advocating for non-violence. It's Jesus-like, not merely political, to proclaim that Jesus Christ and Him crucified and risen and reigning is returning like a Warrior-King and will crush all His and our enemies. It's Jesus-like to proclaim the Gospel and call sinners to repent and believe in Jesus. Be like Jesus.
May true Christians live such bold, loving, outspoken, godly lives in Christ Jesus that certain progressive leftists, the demons, the world, the flesh, and the devil rejoice and mock us when we die. What a glorious thing it will be to be laughed at and mocked and falsely accused by the wicked when you die! Rejoice and be glad in that day! Sing for joy! Christ is all! Jesus is King! And Jesus is worthy! That's my King!
