Just like Assyria was the rod of God's anger and their hands were God's fury toward sinful Israel because of their rebellion against Him, so likewise, the Roman soldiers were the rod of God's anger and the hand of God's fury toward Jesus on the way to and on the cross because of our sins and rebellion imputed to Him (2 Cor. 5:21):
"Ah, Assyria, the rod of my anger; the staff in their hands is my fury!" Isaiah 10:5
"And they were striking his head with a rod and spitting on him" Mark 15:19
"They came up to him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and struck him with their hands." John 19:3
Hallelujah! What a Savior!
